6 Auto Parts Buying Questions I Answer Every Week: Denso Solenoids, Throttle Bodies, and More

I've been handling parts purchasing for a small automotive distributor since early 2021. Roughly $200K a year in engine, electrical, and drivetrain components spread across about seven vendors. I'm not an engineer—I'm the person who gets the same questions from customers, from our counter staff, and from my own boss whenever he's in a hurry.

So these are the six questions about Denso parts and related components that come up most. They're not textbook answers. They're what I've learned from ordering, warranty-claiming, and explaining parts to people who just want their car to work.

1. What is a throttle body in a car?

Basically, it's the gate that controls how much air gets into the engine. It sits between the air intake and the intake manifold. When you hit the gas pedal, the throttle plate opens; when you let off, it closes. Older cars had a cable connecting the pedal to the plate. Modern cars use a "drive-by-wire" setup—an electronic module reads the pedal and moves the plate with a small motor.

From a buying perspective, the main question I get is whether to clean or replace it. Symptoms of a failing throttle body: rough idle, hesitation when accelerating, stalling at stoplights, or codes like P0121/P0122 on the scan tool. If you're sourcing one, check what's included in the assembly—sensors, motor, and throttle plate can come separately or as a complete unit. Also check the connector. I can't tell you how many times a throttle body got returned because the listing didn't specify whether it included the pigtail harness. (The pigtail alone costs almost as much as the body, which feels like a racket.)

Denso supplies throttle bodies for a ton of OE applications, so that's usually the brand we stock. The genuine ones come with the right connector and calibration out of the box. The budget option? Yeah, we tried that once.

2. Are Denso starter motor solenoids really that much better?

Denso is one of the biggest OE starter manufacturers in the world—they supply a ton of starters to Toyota, Honda, and other automakers. The solenoid is the smaller cylinder bolted onto the starter. It's an electromagnet that pushes the pinion gear into the flywheel ring gear and closes the high-current circuit. When it fails, you turn the key and get clicking but no cranking.

One thing I've learned: sometimes you only need the solenoid, not the whole starter. If the starter motor spins but doesn't crank, it's often just the solenoid. Replacing the solenoid alone can save a customer $150-200. That said, if the starter is already tired or the car is 10+ years old, a full starter assembly is usually the smarter call, because you'll pay the labor either way.

On quality: I made the budget mistake once. Saved about $40 a unit buying voltage-compatible solenoids from a lesser-known brand. The failure rate in the first year was roughly three times higher than the Denso units we normally stock. A single roadside no-start call costs way more than the $40 I "saved." (Which, honestly, was a dumb way to learn that lesson.) If the customer wants the car to actually start—and they always do—spend the extra money on the Denso solenoid. That brand reputation is earned.

3. What actually happened in the Toyota Denso fuel pump recall?

This is the most-searched term on the list, for a good reason. In January 2020, Denso—the fuel pump supplier for Toyota and Lexus—recalled certain fuel pumps because the impeller could deform under heat. If the pump failed, the engine could stall or refuse to start. NHTSA recall 20V012 covered roughly 1.8 million vehicles in the U.S., including 2013-2020 Toyota and Lexus models like the Camry, Corolla, Highlander, and a bunch of Lexus sedans and SUVs.

For parts buyers, there's a less-known side of the story. The recall didn't apply to every Denso fuel pump—only to specific part numbers built within a specific date range. So when it broke, we had to pull our entire stock of Denso pumps off the shelf and check every serial number against the affected list. I remember that week vividly: I set up a spreadsheet, cross-checked 40+ units, and ended up sending back about $1,800 worth of pumps. The return process took months. (I'm sure nobody in our accounting department is still bitter, but I wouldn't be shocked.)

Bottom line for anyone sourcing Denso fuel pumps now: know the part number, check the build date, and make sure the serial number matches the box. A quick photo of the serial number settles most questions in under a minute—way faster than explaining a non-standard part to a customer after it fails.

4. Engine timing chain tensioner: should I worry about it?

The timing chain tensioner keeps tension on the timing chain. A chain needs to stay tight; if it gets loose, it can rattle, slap around, and in the worst case skip teeth on the crank or cam sprocket. When that happens, the valves and pistons can meet. That's an engine-out repair.

The classic symptom: a rattling noise on cold start that disappears after a few seconds. That's the hydraulic tensioner losing pressure overnight. Customers ignore this for months, then ask if "that ticking" is going to be a problem. Yeah, it is. It's a wear item, not something to wait on.

I learned this one the hard way. In my first year, I suggested a cheaper budget tensioner to keep a quote low. Six months later the rattle was back, and we redid the job on our dime. The labor cost was roughly 11 times the parts difference. (Not that I ever mentioned that math to my boss.)

For common engines like Toyota's 2AZ-FE, the timing chain itself is designed to last the life of the engine, but the tensioner is worth replacing preventively when you're doing other timing work or when the cold-start rattle shows up. It's cheap insurance, and it saves everyone a lot of headaches later.

5. What do I need to know before buying an S13 differential?

The S13 is the Nissan 240SX/Silvia from 1989 to 1994, and its rear differential is a popular swap for drift and track builds. I get at least one question a week about these, usually from someone who just bought a shell and is figuring out what to order.

Three things I tell everyone before they hand over money. First, the ratio. US-market S13s and JDM cars came with different final drives depending on engine and transmission, and that ratio matters—it changes acceleration, speedometer reading, and highway behavior. A 4.36 diff behind a transmission that expects a 4.08 is a noticeable difference. Know what the car originally had and what the new setup actually needs.

Second, VLSD vs mechanical. The factory viscous limited-slip from that era is old tech. After 200K miles, the fluid inside has lost its properties and a VLSD is basically just a heavy open diff. If you're buying for performance, get a mechanical or helical LSD. Spending $300 on a worn VLSD will be remembered on the first track day.

Third, fitment. The S13 and S14 use different diff mounts and connectors, and even within S13 cars, axle spline counts and speed sensor locations vary. Check the mounts and sensor connector before ordering, and don't trust a listing that just says "fits 240SX." That's how returns happen.

6. How can I tell if a Denso part is genuine?

Here's the question people don't know they should ask. Counterfeit Denso parts show up all the time in the aftermarket. Starter solenoids, throttle bodies, fuel pumps, oxygen sensors—anything with brand recognition attracts fakes.

My rules for spotting them, in order of usefulness. Packaging: genuine Denso parts have consistent printing, correct part numbers, and a proper label with the production code. If the print looks off, or the label is crooked, or something about the machining looks rough, that's a red flag. Once you've held both, you can tell—it's hard to describe, but it feels like the difference between a real wallet and a market wallet.

Price: if a "Denso" unit is 30% cheaper than every authorized dealer in your area, it's not Denso. The online marketplace listings that look too good to be true are, with rare exceptions, exactly that. Genuine parts cost what they cost, and there's a reason.

Serial number and date code: Denso parts are stamped or laser-marked with the production date. Cross-reference it with the label on the box. If there's no date code, or the box says one thing and the part says another, don't install it.

One more thing: buy from authorized distributors when you can. That keeps a digital trace, which makes warranty claims pretty painless. I've filed claims where we had the original order number on file and it took five minutes. Without the paperwork, it's a weeks-long email thread. Good parts sourcing is also good paperwork.
