If you handle parts ordering for a company fleet or a few service vehicles, this checklist is for you. I've been the office administrator at a 150-person logistics company since 2020. Throttle body torque specs are a perfect example. On the Toyota 5S-FE engine (used in many 1990s Camrys), the throttle body bolts are supposed to be at 13 ft-lb, per the factory service manual. Not 'good and tight.' Not 25 ft-lb because 'it's just aluminum.'
Over-torquing an aluminum throttle body will distort the bore and cause a vacuum leak. And the frustrating part is the car will idle fine for a few hundred miles, then throw a lean code at the worst time.
Every application is different. The manual for a 2018 Camry will have different numbers than a 1994 one. So before you install anything—throttle bodies, intake manifolds, engine mounts—look up the torque spec in the service manual. If the supplier says 'torque to spec,' ask which spec.
Step 3: Diagnose a Bad Strut Mount Before Replacing the Whole Strut
A bad strut mount often gets misdiagnosed as a bad strut, a ball joint issue, or a sway bar link. When I first started buying parts for our vans, I ordered two complete strut assemblies based on a mechanic's 'needs front struts' note. Then the clunk was still there after install.
What we actually needed was a strut mount and bearing—around $40 in parts instead of $400 in struts.
Signs of a bad strut mount:
- Clunking or popping over bumps, especially at low speeds
- A feeling that the steering is 'loose' when turning
- A creaking sound when the suspension settles after a dip

A blown head gasket is a failure of the gasket between the engine block and cylinder head. Common symptoms: white smoke from the exhaust, coolant loss without a visible leak, oil that looks like chocolate milk, and overheating. In some cases, the gasket can be replaced and the engine is fine (if the head isn't warped too far).
A cracked block is a crack in the cast iron or aluminum block itself. Symptoms can overlap with a blown head gasket—coolant in the oil, misfires, overheating—but there are clues: external coolant drips from a crack in the block, oil pressure loss, and sometimes a visible crack after cleaning. A cracked block usually means the block needs to be replaced or the engine is done.
Here's where the purchasing part kicks in. A mechanic might say 'it's the head gasket' and order gaskets, head bolts, and machine work. But if the block is cracked, you just spent hundreds on parts you can't return. The surprise wasn't the price of the gasket set. It was the machine shop charge to pressure-test the block and confirm the bad news.
Checklist point: Before you authorize a head gasket repair on an older vehicle, ask for a block crack test and a coolant system pressure test. Those tests cost less than the gasket set.
Step 5: Compare Total Cost, Not Unit Price
This is the boring but profitable step. The $85 radiator from a discount seller is never $85 by the time it lands. Shipping, core fees, and the chance that it comes with the wrong outlet placement—I learned to calculate total cost of ownership (TCO) before comparing quotes.
Here's an example from a 2024 order. The numbers said go with Vendor B—15% cheaper on a batch of Denso oil filters. My gut said stick with our existing distributor because Vendor B took three days to answer a basic question. I went with my gut. We later found out Vendor B had a backlog of 'replacement' filters that looked identical but had no silicone anti-drainback valve (which is pretty important for Toyota engines).
