My mistake: I ordered the reman alternator as soon as I heard a squeak. The original alternator still had a good regulator and good bearings. The pulley was the bad part. According to Denso's catalog (checked January 2025), plugs are specified by engine and VIN, not by what looks close.
If you're chasing a misfire, don't assume a new set of premium plugs will fix a bad ignition coil, a vacuum leak, or carbon buildup. I watched a customer spend good money on expensive iridium spark plugs while the real problem was a coil that had been failing for weeks. The plugs were fine; the coil was not.
My rule now: before buying, pull one old plug and compare thread length, seat design, and heat range. Then write down the original part number. A five-minute visual check has saved me multiple return trips.
Scenario 3: The Hemi Piston Search—Two Different Parts, Same Search Term
Here's where a search box can lead you astray. If you type 'hemi piston' and you're working on a modern 5.7 or 6.4 Hemi engine, you might see performance forged pistons first. They look right in the photos. But they are not the same as an OEM-style replacement piston.
In general, you have two scenarios. Stock replacement usually means a cast or hypereutectic piston with a factory-style ring package and standard wrist pin. High-performance build means a forged piston with different tolerances, often different compression and valve reliefs, and usually a much higher price.
I almost ordered a forged Hemi piston set for a customer's stock 5.7 truck because the early search results were performance parts. The customer didn't need forged pistons. A forged piston can be noisier when cold and needs the machinery set up for its clearance. It would have been an expensive, noisy mistake.
If you're rebuilding a stock engine, look for the piston that matches your exact engine family and, if possible, the part number cast into the old piston. If you're building for boost or high RPM, then yes, forged deserves a serious conversation with your machinist. Just don't let the search result decide for you.
Scenario 4: Symptoms of a Bad Brake Caliper Are Easy to Misread
This one isn't a part-order story as much as a diagnostic story, and it's cost me more than once. Symptoms of a bad brake caliper can look like a pad problem or a rotor problem:
- The car pulls to one side under braking.
- One wheel feels hot after a short drive, or smells like hot brakes.
- Uneven pad wear—one pad at the backing plate while the other still has life.
- The brake pedal feels different: sometimes low, sometimes hard while the car is dragging.
If you put new pads and rotors on a seized caliper, everything feels fine for about a week. Then the new pad gets destroyed by the same stuck piston or frozen guide pin. I've done it. It is embarrassing, and the second repair is never cheaper.
But not every brake issue is a caliper. If the caliper slides are clean and the pads are still wearing unevenly, check the brake hose and the wheel bearing. A collapsed hose can hold pressure on the caliper. My process is the same as it is for alternators: inspect before you order.
I keep a small spreadsheet of our brake jobs from 2020 through 2024. The most common fix I thought I needed before pulling the wheel was different from the actual fix more often than I'd like to admit.
