Are Denso and Nippon Denso the same company?

Same company. Nippon Denso Co., Ltd. was the original name when the company was founded in 1949. In 1996, it officially became Denso Corporation. But you'll still see "Nippon Denso" stamped on older parts, OEM labels, and catalogs, so it's a fair question.

Here's how I explain it to customers: trust the part number, not the name. A starter stamped Nippon Denso and one stamped Denso are the same engineering, same manufacturing standards, same fitment. The brand name changed—the parts didn't.

One practical note though: some online listings title a part "Denso" but show photos of an older Nippon Denso box. That's not a red flag by itself, but verify the part number against your original unit before you buy.

How do I know if my Denso starter motor is failing?

Starters draw a ton of current—150 to 200 amps is typical for most engines. When they're on the way out, you usually get one of these signs:

  • A single click when you turn the key. Not the rapid-fire clicking of a dead battery—one solid click and then nothing.
  • Slow cranking that's clearly weaker than the engine's normal turnover.
  • Intermittent no-start, especially when the engine bay is warm. Heat kills a weak starter.
  • Grinding or high-pitched whining during startup, which can also point to a bad flexplate or flywheel.

Here's the part that trips people up: don't jump straight to blaming the battery. A truly dead battery gives you the rapid-clicking sound. A failing starter solenoid usually gives one click. A voltage drop test takes about 10 minutes and tells you whether the battery's power is actually reaching the starter.

And if you are replacing the starter, have the ring gear checked while it's out. I've lost count of how many times a shop put in a new starter only to discover the real problem was a few ground-off flexplate teeth. That's an expensive lesson in inspecting adjacent parts.

What does a Denso upstream O2 sensor do?

The upstream O2 sensor is mounted in the exhaust before the catalytic converter. It measures oxygen content in the exhaust stream and sends that data to the engine computer, which uses it to adjust the air-fuel mixture in real time. On most modern vehicles, this sensor is the primary input for fuel trim—it's the one that most directly affects fuel economy and emissions.

When an upstream sensor starts to fail, the symptoms are pretty standard:

  • Check engine light with codes like P0130 through P0175, depending on which bank and position the code points to.
  • Fuel economy drops—usually 5% or more, which you'll notice at the pump.
  • Rough idle or hesitation during acceleration.
  • A failed emissions test.

One thing I emphasize with every customer: upstream and downstream O2 sensors are not interchangeable, even when they look identical. Upstream sensors handle fuel-trim measurement; downstream sensors mainly monitor converter efficiency. On V6 and V8 engines, you have two upstream sensors, one per bank, so confirm which position you're ordering before you buy.

I'd also steer you away from any part that promises a "guaranteed emissions pass." The FTC's advertising guidelines require claims to be truthful and substantiated. A sensor alone can't guarantee a pass if the converter is weak or the engine has a vacuum leak. Legitimate parts sell on fitment and spec—not on magic promises.

How fast can I get a Denso part in an emergency?

When I first started in this role, I assumed "emergency order" meant paying double and hoping for the best. After 200+ rush orders, I can tell you the real variable isn't price—it's whether someone can check inventory and move a part within minutes, not hours.

A good example: in March 2024, a repair shop called at 8:30 AM. They had a 2018 Camry on a lift with a dead upstream O2 sensor, and the customer needed the car back by 5 PM. Standard delivery was two days. We had the part in stock, paid a local courier $45 to run it across town, and the part was installed by 11 AM. The customer drove out at 3 PM.

$45 courier fee. That's it. The alternative was a car parked in the lot for two days, a customer who's never coming back, and a service bay that should have been turning profit.

The same logic applies to shipping. If you have a 2-3 day buffer, USPS or UPS ground is fine. If you don't, stop worrying about the $8 shipping savings. USPS rates went up again in January 2025—a First-Class stamped letter now runs $0.73—and package rates keep climbing. Shipping cost is the smallest line on the invoice compared to a vehicle that's down for an extra day.

Our company policy now requires live tracking on any Denso part going to a shop with a vehicle off the road. It costs a couple dollars and eliminates the 4 PM "where's my part" phone call. That policy came directly from a mistake we made back in 2023, when a ground shipment fell off the radar and the shop owner had to call the customer and break the news. Never again.

"Muffler replacement near me"—what should I look for in a shop?

I'm not a muffler tech, but I order exhaust components every week, and I've read enough invoices to know where the process goes sideways.

First, ask what brand of muffler you're getting. Aftermarket exhaust is a fine choice for most daily drivers—especially older cars. But there's a difference between a known aftermarket brand and a no-name unit with a barcode sticker. You should know which one you're paying for. If the shop says "we use our supplier's house brand," that's an honest answer, and for a muffler it's often perfectly adequate.

Second, get the labor estimate in writing before work starts. A typical muffler replacement is 1-2 hours of labor, depending on the vehicle. If a quote looks unusually low, there's probably an upsell coming—sometimes justified, since rust happens, but you still want it explained before they start ordering parts.

One red flag: a shop that quotes a firm price over the phone without looking at the car. A muffler doesn't rust by itself. If it's gone, the hangers, flanges, and mid-pipe are probably in the same shape. A trustworthy shop sends you photos from under the vehicle before they order anything.

What is air filter adhesive used for?

Air filter adhesive—also called filter media glue—bonds the filter media (paper, foam, or synthetic material) to a filter's frame or end caps. It's used during filter manufacturing, plus in repair and fabrication settings where someone is building custom filters.

The surprise I hear most often: you can't fix a clogged air filter with adhesive. It's an assembly product, not a recharging agent. If your engine air filter is dirty, replace it. The shops that buy air filter adhesive from us are mostly fabricators building custom-sized filters for equipment no longer in production—or HVAC contractors making specialized filter panels.

If you're ordering adhesive for a project, the spec that matters is temperature resistance. A product rated for HVAC ductwork will soften under the hood of a car. Automotive filter adhesive should handle a range from about -40°F to 300°F. When someone asks me "does any glue work?" the answer is no. Service temperature and chemical resistance decide whether the bond holds up.

What does RH mean on a thermostat?

Two different answers, depending on where you saw it.

If "RH" is on the thermostat display next to a percentage, it's relative humidity. That's a measure of moisture in the air. For most homes, 45-55% is the comfortable range. Lower than that and you'll get static electricity and dry skin; higher and you're looking at condensation and potential mold issues.

If "RH" is printed on a thermostat terminal—or in the wiring diagram—it's the 24V power supply for the heating system. Older thermostats had separate power terminals for heating (RH) and cooling (RC). If your existing thermostat has a wire on RH and nothing on RC, that usually means heating and cooling share a single power source, and your new thermostat needs to be configured to match.

So: a percentage next to RH is humidity. A wire terminal labeled RH is heating power. Seeing both meanings confuse people is part of why I wrote this FAQ in the first place—but now you'll know which one you're looking at.
