The same part can be a smart fix in one fleet and a terrible idea in another. We group our vehicles into three categories:

  • Context 1 — High-mileage workhorses (150k+ miles) that only need to survive another 12–24 months.
  • Context 2 — Steady-Eddie daily drivers (100k–150k miles) that you plan to keep for 3–5 years and need to be reliable.
  • Context 3 — Showcase or performance vehicles where downtime and exact specs matter more than the bill.

Your situation might not fit these buckets exactly, but the logic should still apply.

Context 1: The Keep-It-Running Fleet

When your van has 175,000 miles and your business plan is to run it into the ground, the goal is minimizing upfront cost without triggering a bigger failure.

Alternator (Denso alternator repair kit). If the alternator is just weak brushes or a tired voltage regulator, a Denso alternator repair kit is a smart play. I've used these on two of our older service vans and saved about $400 vs. replacing the whole unit. But keep in mind: the labor to rebuild can easily eat the savings if your shop charges book time for a full teardown. Get the quote before you commit.

Fuel pump (Denso TT 340LPH). Skip the Denso TT 340LPH fuel pump here. That's a high-flow, 340-liters-per-hour performance pump meant for forced-induction builds (more on that later). On a stock high-mileage engine, an OEM replacement pump is the right move—it'll have the correct flow and pressure specs.

Before you spend $1,200–$1,800 for a replacement, ask what the car is actually worth. If the body is rusty or the transmission is slipping, scrapping it is often the better business decision. Also, verify that the converter is the actual failure point—a lazy oxygen sensor will trigger a P0420 code and mimic a dead catalyst. I've been burned by that one before (ugh).

Dirty AC condenser coils. Dirty AC condenser coils are a maintenance item, not a replacement prompt. A soft brush and a low-pressure water rinse usually restore airflow and cooling performance. Catalytic converter. For a 2009 catalytic converter on a car you're keeping, replacement is usually justified if the rest of the car is solid. But don't cheap out on a generic no-name converter. According to the EPA, replacement converters must meet federal standards under 40 CFR Part 85. If you live in a CARB state, you also need a California-approved EO number (Source: CARB). A direct-fit Denso or equivalent is your best bet.

Dirty AC condenser coils. Cleaning dirty AC condenser coils every two years is a legitimate maintenance procedure for daily drivers. The key is not to push the cleaning effort too far: if fins are corroded or crushed, replace the condenser. Cleaning can't resurrect a unit that physically lost its heat-exchange capability.

Electronic throttle body. For a daily driver, how to clean electronic throttle body is an answer that saves money, but there's a catch. You have to know which parts to avoid cleaning. Spraying throttle-body cleaner into the wrong area can damage the electronic actuator or the throttle position sensor. Dirty AC condenser coils. On a clean car, dirty AC condenser coils are simply a sign of neglect. Rinse them annually with a gentle hose spray. If you've let them clog and the AC is weak, replace—once a condenser gets blocked with debris and began corroding, cleaning only addresses the symptom.

Electronic throttle body. If a throttle body is carboned up on a performance car, I'd lean toward replacement rather than cleaning. In a performance environment, even minor bore wear or coating damage can cause a sticking throttle blade—which is a safety issue. Cleaning can be a temporary fix, but replacement ensures consistent revs and no risk of throttle-cable hang on drive-by-wire systems.

How to Tell Which Context You're In

Here's the quick decision tool I use with our own parts budget:

  • How many miles/oil changes do you need this vehicle to last? If under 2 years or 30k miles → Context 1.
  • Do you need predictable reliability for 3–5 years? → Context 2.
  • Is the vehicle a priority for enjoyment, performance, or daily transportation where a breakdown is unacceptable? → Context 3.

If you're in between—say, a 140k-mile car you plan to keep for 3 years—lean toward Context 2, but look for ways to save on parts with good track records, like a Denso alternator repair kit if you have a trustworthy independent shop.

No matter which context fits, the point is to make the decision consciously. It took me 3 years and about 300 warranty claims to fully accept that there's no one-size-fits-all answer.
